Paintings and limited edition prints by
award-winning international artist Anthony Whiting
A
Anthony Whiting, born in Mexico of an English mother and American father has
lived in Latin America, North Africa, Asia, Italy, Sweden and England in addition
to the U.S. Studying and working in these diverse cultures has helped him
develop unusual empathy and sensitivity to people, places and the natural world
as well as fluency in five languages.
Anthony received a B.Arch. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and
subsequently served as an architect in the Peace Corps in Tunisia. While there he
was greatly impressed by local art and craft forms, by the textures and colors of
the desert and by the cultures of the peoples in North Africa. He practiced
architecture internationally for 21 years while based in Africa, Italy and England.
His works are in numerous collections on both sides of the Atlantic and he has
had numerous one-man and group exhibitions in England and the U.S.
Anthony has studied painting at graduate university level and at workshops with
Barbara Nechis, Al Brouillette, Jean Dobie, Paul Leveille, Margaret Martin,
Charles Sovek and Robert Burridge. He has art teaching experience to groups
and private students in his studios in his former studios in Rome, London, New
York, Greenwich, CT and now, Jacksonville, FL. He is currently teaching two
community education painting courses at Fletcher Senior High School in Neptune
Beach, Florida.
Inspiration for his painting comes from nature in all its forms -- mineral, wood,
floral, birds, animal and aquatic life. He uses design principles of contrast,
rhythm, repetition and where appropriate, introduces rich sensuality or humor into
his works.
In Jacksonville, Anthony was the proud recipient of the brAIDS ARTreach 2006
First Prize award for his painting “Lilly Pond Treasure” and was also the signature
artist at the following year’s event.

The Artist's Statement:
The most genuine, valuable and
meaningful expression by an artist
is that which he or she feels as
opposed to what that artist merely
sees, believes or thinks. Painting
for me is an expression of what I
feel about subject matter, colors,
composition or forms. And, one of
the wondrous things about
paintings is the joy and surprise that
can result from serendipitous
interplay of colors and textures and
forms.
My painting is also a response to
vivid impressions from travel in over
forty-four countries – from the
spiritual nature of Japanese temple
rock gardens to lush oases in
Sahara desert sand seas to the
colors of underwater aquatic life in
the Caribbean.
Inspiration for my artwork comes
from nature in all its forms –
mineral, wood, floral, birds, animal
and aquatic life. I make use of
design principles of contrast,
rhythm, repetition and, where
appropriate, introduce rich
sensuality or humor into my
painting. I love painting!
